thoughts on first impressions

You may or may not know that I'm in grad school and as part of my program I have to complete a year-long internship that starts in May. But now you know.
Right now, I'm in the process of interviewing at a few potential internship sites and freakin' out about making a good first impression.
I believe first impressions are important.
Not because I think everyone should like me upon meeting me {though I hope they do, says my inner people-pleaser}, but because it's really hard to change someone's mind once they've established their view/opinion of you.
I'm guilty of this when I have a negative first impression of someone. But I'm working on it.
It takes a lot of effort and proof to show someone you aren't the a-hole they first met.
The same goes for a good impression - it takes a lot of effort and proof for someone to realize the person they liked initially is actually an a-hole.
I think this is why people stay in jacked up relationships.

But if there is one thing I believe in as much as making a good first impression, it's that people can change.
Which may be somewhat contradictory.
Sure, you're first impression - good or bad - of someone might be right at the time.
But I think the thing to remember is that situations in a person's life can have an affect on their behavior.

I like to believe that people are, in general, good and want to play nice in this game of life.
And I often give people the benefit of the doubt, unless they really piss me off.
But Holly, what about murderers and masochists and sadists and sadomasochists and puppy mills?
Well, I think some people just make plain old bad decisions. And others I think act out in negative ways due to faulty thinking and beliefs {which is where therapists/counselors {this will be me soon!} and/or psychiatrists and psychologists come in}.

While I do think you should put your best foot forward as much as you can, I think it's important to remember that no one is perfect and we each have bad days.
And sometimes we meet people on our bad days.
First impressions say a lot about a person, but it's not the whole story.

I completely agree with you on this.. I'm the worst person on the planet to judge people by first impressions and i'm even worse while in the gym says my husband. So I've really had to work on that since moving to Texas.

I will admit that I am BIG on first impressions. It's really hard for me to get over a bad first impression of someone. You will do fine though - you're awesome :)

I love your last line in this post; "First impressions say a lot about a person, but it's not the whole story." SO true. There are plenty of people who I pre-judged upon first meeting them to only become some of my closest friends. Funny how we do that. Goes to show how important it is to be open minded for sure!
