As I type, Shawn is seated across from me, reclining on the sofa and playing on his phone and laptop. When I look at him, I am reminded of many things that led us to right here, right now. Many of those things make me smile. Some make me well up with tears - both happy and sad. Some make me wish I would have said or done things differently in the moment. And some of those things remind me that our relationship has been a labor of love. Sharing your life with someone can be trying, but through it all, we've learned and we've lived and we've grown. And it's been worth it.

Through it all - every up and down, twist and unexpected turn - there is one thing I never question about my marriage - how much we truly love each other.

I remember the first day I saw Shawn back in 2002 during our first semester of college. I knew there was something different about him. Our entire relationship has been founded on true friendship. We enjoy being together, but we don't suffocate each other. We respect each other's need for "me" time and time with our friends. And I think that balance - though we are constantly working on it - is what makes our marriage great.

Our marriage is not perfect. Far from it. And I am definitely not in the running for wife of the year. There are days I want to hug Shawn and days I just want to smack him silly. We push each other's buttons. We make each other laugh. We comfort each other. And when it comes down to it, we make a pretty great team.

When I look at Shawn, I can't imagine going through life with anyone else. I don't tell him that enough. I don't say "I love you" enough. But like I said, I never question how much we love each other. It's in the way we look at each other. How we tell dirty jokes and smack each other's asses in passing. It's in the way we make fun of each other. It's in the little every day things we do for each other {admittedly, Shawn is much better about the little things than I am}.

Building and sharing your life with another person so intimately isn't easy, and we're just getting started. There is a lot of work and compromising ahead for Shawn and I, as well as a lot of wonderful moments, and I have no doubt that it will be worth it.

Beautifully written. I love this so much... it's nice to read a real take on a real marriage. Because if I have to agree to a life where I'm not allowed to get the urge to smack someone silly from time to time, I'll never make it.

As I'm in the 3rd month of a new relationship and dealing with the struggles and growing that comes along with that - I NEEDED to read that this morning. It reminded me that I'm not gonna be this "perfect" gf - nor is he gonna be the "perfect" bf - but if we want it, we'll make it work.

Thank you, lady. I seriously needed that this morning.

I love this. And it might have made me well up a little, but I think I'm still PMS'y or I'll just blame it on that

This is a wonderful post and I completely agree with you as far as how your best relationships are built (your marriage for instance). I consider my bf to be marriage material so far (crossing fingers!) and you're right - it's about the little things and the comfort and security of understanding the love that just exists. And it's fucking hard work sometimes so I imagine marriage or even living together makes it even tougher. Good for you for sticking out the tough times and keeping the commitment!
